Scratchboard

This relatively uncommon medium consists of white clay pressed onto paper, and is most often coated with a thin layer of opaque black ink.  Al uses a very fine knife to scratch through the ink, creating images that appear remarkable three-dimensional and life-like.  He then uses acrylic color to heighten the sense of realism.  Always striving to improve and expand his techniques, Al has developed new and innovative multi-media approaches to scratchboard that have resulted in the production of breathtaking paintings that are often mistaken for photographs.
